Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Whiteland Business Academy?
The Whiteland Business Academy is a program designed to assist students in their journey to become the business leaders of tomorrow. Through required coursework, monthly meetings during GI, and BPA, the Whiteland Business Academy helps prepare students for post-secondary business education and the professional world.
What is the required coursework?
The required coursework includes Accounting, Business Law, Computer Applications, Management, Marketing, and one additional year-long option course. For this option students can take a year-long course like Business Technology Lab or Business Math. Another option is to take 2 one-semester courses, which include advanced computer applications, computer programming, desktop publishing, personal finance, or web design.
Why are there monthly meetings during GI?
The monthly meetings during GI provide a time in which students can network with community leaders or learn about a topic of professional development from one of the WCHS business teachers. Possible topics for GI will include dinner etiquette, international business, interview skills, and creating an résumé.
What are the benefits of joining WBA?
· Business knowledge and skills that is transferable to secondary-level institutions and the professional world
· A recommendation letter signed by the WBA faculty
· A business honor cord that may be worn during graduation
· Opportunity to network with local business leaders
How does someone get admitted into WBA?
Inform Mr. Ruiz in B111 of your interest. Together you can arrange a time in which you will interview with the WCHS business teachers. If accepted, you will receive an acceptance letter that will inform you of the first GI meeting.
What is BPA?
BPA, Business Professionals of America, is one of three requirements for the Whiteland Business Academy. BPA is a competition-based club sponsored by Mr. Kunz and Mr. Ruiz. In BPA, you will pick two areas to compete in. Possible areas of focus include Word, Excel, accounting, marketing, finance, web design, desktop publishing, and much more. All you have to do is attend two hour-long practices after school during the first semester. You will compete in Danville for district sometime during January. If you place high enough, you can have the opportunity to compete in Indianapolis for state or even nationally. BPA is a great opportunity for students to network, focus on an area of interest, receive awards, and even miss school time. Also, BPA looks great on an résumé.
So, what are the requirements for WBA?
There are three requirements for WBA, which include:
1. Complete all of the required coursework with a minimum GPA of 2.5 in all business classes
2. Attend and participate in monthly GI meetings
3. Participate in BPA
What if I am unsure about my future career? What if I choose not to study business at the next level or become a business leader?
Although WBA is designed for future business students or leaders, WBA provides a good option for individuals who are unsure of their future career. For instance, you go to college, but are unsure of a major or you want to change your major. If you completed WBA, you can always fall back on business, since you are comfortable with the skills and concepts taught by local business colleges.
Is there any cost involved?
The coursework and monthly GI meetings are free. The only possible cost is in BPA, paying to register for district or state. Typically, these costs are minimal, just $20 for district.
What if I have any other questions?
